Billy Strings

You’ve probably seen him. Maybe you’ve even heard him. He is one of the most popular touring bands in the world. And yet you might not know that he’s a Grammy winner. Billy Strings was born William Apostol in Lansing, Michigan. His parents named him Billy Strings, and his father later began to teach him music in a trailer park. He uses the natural ability he was given to play the music he wants. Songs he often plays include “Dust in a Baggie”, “Meet Me at the Creek”, “Taking Water”, “Away From the Mire”, “Seven Weeks In County”, “Leadfoot” and more. His album “Highway Prayers” came out in 2024 and he won his 2nd Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album in 2 years later in 2026 for that album as well as “Home” he won it for in 2021. Billy Strings was nominated for and won a number of International Bluegrass Music Awards (IBMA) as well, including Entertainer of the Year in 2025, Guitar Player of the Year in 2019, and New Artist of the Year in 2019. Known for blending traditional bluegrass with rock and psychedelic elements, Billy Strings’ music expands the boundaries of what is considered bluegrass. In addition to touring with his own band, Billy Strings has toured and played with other well known artists including Del McCoury, Willie Nelson and Béla Fleck, among others.

Cross Insurance Arena Information

The Cross Insurance Arena is located at 1 Civic Center Square in downtown Portland, Maine. As a contemporary music venue the seating capacity of the floor can be reduced and configured to hold up to 9,500 for a concert event. The floor will have reserved seating, club seating, suites and accessible seating for patrons. There will also be a selection of snacks, beverages, beer and wine and casual concession food such as hot dogs, pizza and pretzels sold throughout the venue. Cross Insurance Arena hosts a wide range of events including concerts, sports events, family shows and conventions. Cross Insurance Arena will serve as the home to the Maine Mariners Hockey team.
